About Manami’s Kitchen

My roots

My dad’s Japanese, so I grew up around a lot of Asian home cooking. But eating more veg-based, I realized I missed dishes like yakitori — glazed, grilled skewers that are simple, delicious, and nostalgic

Then a solo trip to Japan in 2025 to see family sparked some ideas. I discovered veg-based versions of the food I’d grown up with, came home inspired, and started recreating it — making seitan skewers from scratch, perfecting pickles, and hand-shaping onigiri.

Why vegetables?

My cooking adventures began after leaving UK city living in my late twenties, when I moved to the west coast of Canada.

I found myself working at farmers' markets, cooking at a vegan cafe, and was surrounded by nourishing, seasonal, happy produce. I was eating my veggies at last, with more connection to what I was eating, and an excitement about food.

Now I’m based back in the UK, it’s all come together in Manami’s Kitchen — vibrant, home-style Japanese cooking, made to nourish and made with heart.
